Terroir
The Eger wine region is located at 47.9 degrees north latitude, similar to Chablis in France. The difference is that due to the protection of the Bükk and the southern exposure of the slopes, the summer is warmer here, and thus our wine region is also suitable for the production of high-quality red wine. It is a rarity in the wine world, but in Eger we can make both cool-climate white and red wines.
HISTORY
The tradition of viticulture and winemaking in the Eger wine region goes back more than 1,000 years. Grapes and wine are inseparable from the life of the city and the surrounding countryside, as it was in the past, as it is today. That is why the history of Eger wine is particularly interesting, as it is constantly influenced by historical events and characterful personalities, and the same is true in the opposite way as well.
The most important wine of the Eger wine region is the Egri Bikavér and its white pair, the Egri Csillag. Through these two blends, the local winemakers show their unique characteristics and historical traditions.
Egri Csillag
This is the Eger wine region itself, bottled as white wine. In 2010, the local winemakers gave an institutionalized form to the long-standing tradition of blending in the wine region with the creation of the Egri Csillag. Similar to its counterpart, the Egri Bikavér, Egri Csillag can be blended with at least four grape varieties.
Egri Bikavér
Many people associate the story of Egri Bikvér with the legendary siege of 1552 and the superhuman strength of the castle defenders. However, the exact date of origin of the wine type is not known. The oldest document in which the type of wine from Eger, called Bikavér, is mentioned, dates from 1851.
VINEYARDS OF EGER
The Eger wine region’s protection of origin system was developed by the local wine community in such a way as to provide easy navigation for wine consumers. We can imagine the three levels as a pyramid. The broadest layer of this, the base of the system, is made up of classicus wines.
COMMUNITY
Wine is a social experience not only of its consumption, but also of its preparation. In the case of other foods and drinks, it is not typical to display the place of origin to the degree that is customary for wines. And this turns living side by side into cooperation, since we have to work together to ensure that the Eger name means value.
